Feng Shui is an East Asian practice of organizing space, which consists in finding favorable flows of qi energy. In turn, qi energy permeates all objects and phenomena, influencing their state, and also determines the emotional and physical state of people. Qi is believed to be the vital energy that all systems of the human body depend on and function thanks to.
Feng Shui also considers the interaction of five basic elements – wood, earth, fire, water and metal – forces or substances that describe all the phenomena and properties of life. Harmony or disharmony is determined at a particular point in space and time based on the attributes of these elements. In addition, feng shui attaches great importance to the orientation of the area and the direction from which the qi energy comes.
In fact, feng shui helps to choose a place (or auspicious time) to start a particular movement, focusing on the energy flows of the universe. This science teaches how to bring life into harmony by organizing the life of a person and the surrounding space around him. First of all, feng shui considers a place to sleep, since we spend more than a third of our lives in bed.

Feng Shui places great importance on the orientation of space and the selection of a location to build a house relative to the cardinal points – ancient China invented the compass more than a thousand years ago. Before the start of construction, the geography of the area was studied, allowing you to choose the optimal location for the future home. According to the Chinese philosophy of organizing space, the place for the bedroom should be located at the back of the house, away from the front doors – the location of the sleeping room next to or opposite the front door can instill a sense of excitement and anxiety. The first principle of choosing a place to sleep according to Feng Shui is the absence of barriers to the free circulation of qi energy. For example, there should be no cluttering objects under the bed – this impedes the flow of air and blocks the flow of energy. According to Feng Shui beliefs, it is not advisable to place the bed directly under the window as it disrupts sleep and negatively impacts a person’s energy.
The second main principle of the organization of the matrimonial bedroom is the symmetry of both sides of the bed, as well as its integrity. If there is a bedside table to the left of the bed, it should also be located to the right. The mattress should be single and large enough to allow the couple to sleep comfortably. According to Feng Shui, one should place the bed with the headboard against the wall, and the left and right sides should be easily accessible – it is strongly discouraged to push the sleeping area into a corner. Feng Shui recommends not placing massive objects above the bed, such as shelves with books, a chandelier, or canopy – it is not recommended. The modern interpretation also prohibits air conditioning over the head of the sleepers.
Another important rule is that when entering the bedroom you should not rest against the bed – in other words, the door should not be in line with the place to sleep. The worst option is the one in which the legs during sleep are located exactly towards the door. If it is physically impossible to put a bed otherwise, one can separate the door and the bed with a curtain or screen.

The main mistake in organizing a place to sleep, according to Feng Shui, is the location of the head of the bed against the wall, behind which is the kitchen or bathroom. In this case, unwanted energy flows may affect the sleeping person, disrupting their ability to have deep and restorative sleep. Unfortunately, the layout of the neighboring apartment also plays a role.
Cluttering the bedroom with objects and clothes disrupts the circulation of energy. The location of the mirror is also specified separately, which in most cases is generally not desirable in the bedroom. First, it should not reflect the front door; secondly, when in bed, a person should in no case see himself in the mirror.
How to fall asleep faster?
One of the main reasons that disturb the quality of sleep is the presence of excessive amounts of light in the bedroom. Recall that the production of the sleep hormone melatonin occurs only in conditions of subdued lighting. Bright light sources (and especially energy-saving and bluish fluorescent lamps) disrupt jet lag and can cause insomnia.
Feng Shui does not recommend the use of a single powerful light source in the bedroom – especially above the bed – preferring several lamps at different points in the room. The ideal place for the location of such lamps are bedside tables – however, in this case, as always, it is necessary to observe the principle of symmetry and place the light both on the left and on the right.
